What to expect from your first Thai massage
23 June 2026
If a Thai massage is on your list but you are not quite sure what you are signing up for, you are not alone. It is one of the questions we are asked most. The good news is that there is nothing to be nervous about, and a little knowledge makes the whole thing more enjoyable.
It is usually fully clothed. Traditional Thai massage is given on a padded mat while you stay dressed in loose, comfortable clothes. There is no oil. Instead, your therapist uses palm and thumb pressure along the muscles, combined with gentle, assisted stretches. If you have pictured lying under a towel in a dim room, this is a little different, and many people are pleasantly surprised by how active and freeing it feels.
It should feel firm, not painful. Good Thai massage works into tension, so it can feel firm, but it should never hurt. The pressure is always adjusted to suit you. Speak up if you would like it lighter or deeper. Your therapist would far rather you said something than quietly endured.
You will be looked after. Before we begin, we will talk through how you are feeling and anything you would like us to focus on. Every treatment is given by a trained therapist in a private, comfortable room. You can ask questions at any point.
Afterwards, take it easy. You might feel deeply relaxed, a little lighter, or pleasantly sleepy. Drinking water and not rushing back into a busy day helps the benefit last.
